Cleaning Mold Off of Wood

Posted on November 27, 2019 at 1:40 PM

(Remember at the first sign of mold in your home the surface in question should be cleaned immediately.) Make sure you put on protective clothing such as a long sleeved shirt, gloves and a mask before you begin. Leverette explains the following steps:

1. Put on protective old clothing to prevent bleach stains from ruining your new clothes.

2. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to vacuum the mold from the wood surface.

3. Wash down sealed or painted wood using a liquid washing detergent and water solution with a soft-bristled brush.

4. Spray with distilled white vinegar for a small amount of mold growth that has not left severe stains or penetrated the wood.

5. Use chlorine bleach for tough mold stains.

6. If the mold stains still remain, the wood surface will need to be sanded to remove the spores that have deeply penetrated the wood.

How To Protect Your Hardwood Floors From Direct Sunlight

Posted on October 30, 2019 at 1:55 PM

Direct sunlight can do costly damage to your hardwood floors. Too much sunlight will pull the color out of the floorboards and continued overexposure could cause the floorboards to weaken. Joe Taylor explains how to protect your hardwood floors:

The best protection for your hardwood floors is to not expose them to damage in the first place. Minimizing the amount of time or the strength of the sunlight they face will significantly reduce the risk of long-term damage.

• Use blinds or shades: when the sun is peaking right through your windows, you should draw blinds or shades to protect your floors. Minimal amounts of light will still be let through so you can see, but the integrity of your floors will thank you.

• Blackout lining: if you want to take it one step further, you can line your curtains with a blackout lining to prevent all sunlight from entering and damaging your floors.

• Window tinting: window tints can be purchased from your local hardwood store and installed either by a professional or you can do it yourself. The following are two options for installation:

o Solar window film reduces glare and fading by offering up to 90% UV protection, plus it can lower cooling costs up to 30%.

o Clear UV blocking is another option, but it doesn’t offer any protection against heat

• Install window glass made to block UV rays: if you’re building a new home or replacing the windows in your house, advancement in window making technology has led to the creation of windows made to block UV rays, such as these windows.
