(Remember at the first sign of mold in your home the surface in question should be cleaned immediately.) Make sure you put on protective clothing such as a long sleeved shirt, gloves and a mask before you begin. Leverette explains the following steps:

1. Put on protective old clothing to prevent bleach stains from ruining your new clothes.

2. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to vacuum the mold from the wood surface.

3. Wash down sealed or painted wood using a liquid washing detergent and water solution with a soft-bristled brush.

4. Spray with distilled white vinegar for a small amount of mold growth that has not left severe stains or penetrated the wood.

5. Use chlorine bleach for tough mold stains.

6. If the mold stains still remain, the wood surface will need to be sanded to remove the spores that have deeply penetrated the wood.
